The Life and Breath

inner strength through meditation

Can Meditation Build Real Inner Strength, or Is It Just Relaxation?

What is Meditation?

Meditation is travelling inwards. It is a journey towards a destination—the beautiful state of  inner peace and bliss.

Our mind is constantly oscillating between thoughts, emotions, memories and worries.  Meditation helps us bring balance to the mind.

It is not merely Relaxation; it is Relaxed Concentration—consciously relaxing both the body  and the mind while remaining aware and present.

Meditation for Beginners

If you are new to meditation, start simply.

•First, sit still.

Do not move. Allow your body to become quiet and comfortable. Relax your whole body  from tip to toe.

•Watch your breath.

Feel the incoming and outgoing breath. Do not control your inhalation or exhalation. Simply  observe.

As you continue watching your breath, you gradually become aware of your body relaxing. Now relax your mind.

•Just as you relaxed your body, allow your mind to relax too. Let the thoughts come and let  them go. Do not fight them or try to suppress them. Simply become a spectator.

If your mind wanders, gently bring it back.

You can slowly say, with a firm yet peaceful voice:

Peace… I am Still… I am at Peace…

Peace… Peace… Peace…

Initially, meditation may feel difficult. That is perfectly natural. You may simply chant: OM… OM… OM…

…and observe how you feel.

The key is regular practice.

Inner Strength Through Meditation

Inner Strength Through Meditation helps us develop our inner strength.

It helps clear the mental “cobwebs” and brings greater clarity to our thoughts. When we  consciously relax our body and mind, we create a space where we can observe ourselves  more clearly.

In Life & Breath – A Science, we practise meditational affirmations that we memorise and  chant.

The idea is that when the conscious mind becomes quiet and relaxed, positive thoughts and  affirmations can be absorbed more deeply. With regular practice, these affirmations can  become positive mental habits.

And whenever the mind wanders, simply return to:

Peace… Peace… Peace…

I can personally feel the difference in my everyday life.

Life is full of little situations that can disturb us.

The housemaid is late. The coconut seller hasn’t arrived. Unexpected guests suddenly appear.  Something doesn’t go according to plan—and we become irritated, frustrated or anxious.

But regular meditation teaches us to pause.

Instead of immediately reacting, we learn to observe.

Over time, we can become better equipped to deal with anger, frustration and fear. The situation may remain the same, but our response can become calmer. That is how we develop inner strength—by learning to remain calm even in chaos.

Meditation for Self-Development

Meditation is also a beautiful tool for self-development.

If possible, choose a fixed time and a fixed place for your meditation practice. Creating a  routine brings discipline and order into our lives.

There are days when our mind feels foggy, filled with negative or disturbing thoughts.  Meditation gives us an opportunity to pause and recognise what is happening within us.

Simply sitting quietly and observing the breath can help create a sense of calm. Think of a lake.

When you throw a stone into still water, ripples are formed. You cannot see your reflection  clearly. But when the water becomes calm, you can see yourself.

Our mind is much the same.

When the mind becomes calm, we can see ourselves more clearly.

We begin to recognise our thoughts, our reactions, our strengths and the areas where we can  grow.

This process of looking within leads us towards self-awareness and self-discovery.

Mind-Body Healing

There is one connection that is very clear: when we are disturbed mentally or physically, one  of the first things affected is our breath.

This is where the practices of Life & Breath come together.

The breathing exercises taught in the Basic Course help us work with the body and breath,  while meditation helps us cultivate greater calm and awareness of the mind.

Think about our daily routine.

We brush our teeth to keep them clean.

We take a shower to keep our outer body clean.

But we also need to ask ourselves:

What are we doing to take care of our inner world?

What about the anger, fear, jealousy, anxiety and negative thoughts that accumulate within  us?

Just as we care for our physical well-being, meditation gives us an opportunity to care for our  mental and emotional well-being.

At Life & Breath, breathing exercises and meditation with positive affirmations form an  important part of this journey.

We practise nine positive affirmations:

I am Whole.

I am Perfect.

I am Strong.

I am Powerful.

I am Loving.

I am Harmonious.

I am Rich.

I am Young.

I am Happy.

These affirmations can become powerful reminders of the qualities we wish to nurture within  ourselves.

Meditation and Self-Discovery

Perhaps one of the most beautiful gifts of meditation is self-discovery. When you sit still and give yourself time, thoughts begin to emerge.

Some may make you smile. Some may make you think. Some may reveal things about  yourself that you had never paused to notice.

Give yourself those moments.

Chintan aur Manan karo.

Reflect. Observe. Understand yourself.

Before connecting with the outside world, take some time to connect with your own self. This is your life.

This is your journey.

Give yourself at least 20 minutes for meditation, if your routine permits. With regular  practice, you may find that those few quiet minutes become some of the most valuable  moments of your day.

Feel the peace within yourself.

Listen to your breath.

Quiet the noise.

Look within.

And slowly, you may discover that the peace you were searching for outside was always  waiting within you.

Meditate. Reflect. Discover yourself.

And create your own magic.
